Spark&Dowel is custom designed, Hand Crafted furniture, art and architectural fabrication. A concept born out of love for the way an old table feels. the smell of ionized air after a fresh weld, the taste of sawdust , and one guy's love of being surrounded by things crafted by his own hands. Made with love and by Cooper and a small team in Los Angeles California
The doors to the original tiny studio were opened by Cooper in 2011. Spark&Dowel now occupies a 4500sq/ft shop and design studio in Downtown LA.
COOPER REYNOLDS GROSS FOUNDER - Trained as a photographer from a young age, Cooper has always loved aesthetics. While rethinking his life in his late 20's he decided to embark on an ambitious remodel of the home owned by his girlfriend at the time. when nearing completion he decided to build, as opposed to purchase new furniture for the house. Friends invited over for dinner frequently queried where the pieces were bought and eventually began asking Cooper to make pieces for them. Out of hobby a business was born.
Letter from Cooper:
As a child, my sister, brother and I would eat at a small Oak table. That table was the first piece of furniture my father had bought as a young man during the late 60s in upstate New York. When he purchased the table it was probably already 40 years old. It had seen countless dinners, conversations... moments in peoples lives. It went on to served my father all through his twenties and into his thirties when my siblings and I arrived, My brother and I tried everything we could to destroy it during our youth (including trying to eat it), but it always seemed to grow tougher. I vividly remember picking at the gaps between the boards. The spots where decades of use, a move across the continent, and a growing family had worn away at the softest bits and retained only the hardest, the strongest. I learned how to eat, how to speak, my sister picked on me and I, in turn, picked on my brother all at that table. It is a part of my story. That table now sits in my sister's kitchen. When I visit my sister and we sit around that little table, I run my hands over those worn oak boards and am reminded of what a table is supposed to be. It is a place to gather, to rest, to laugh and to grow. it is a place for family and a place for solitude. It should last like that little 90 year old table has. A table should be able to survive the destructive power of young boys and yet grow more beautiful with age. it should transcend design and become a part of your story. Spark&Dowel Strives to embody these values. to create pieces that embody "home" whether in the corporate office or your living room. Every piece that leaves this studio is part of my family.
